Theories of Democratic Self-Defence: Exclusion, Toleration, Integration
2023-24 | Riksbankens Jubileumsfond | SEK 1 589 700
The aim of this project is to examine militant democracy alongside less studied theories of democratic self-defence that prioritize toleration and social integration respectively. It sheds light into the ideas and normative arguments that sustain them, identifies their conceptual lines of demarcation, analyses their pros and cons, their links and contrasts. My aim is to offer a concentrated, critical reading of a field that is at present overly dispersed. Full Abstract.

Dilemmas of Democratic Self-Defence in European Public Broadcasting
2021-23 | Swedish Research Council | SEK 3 283 000
The project studies how public service broadcasting organizations throughout Europe have responded to the growing presence of populist and extremist parties. It studies empirically and normatively how such organizations have dealt with the dilemma between, on one hand, political pluralism and open debate and, on the other, the human dignity of all members of society.
Researchers: Ludvig Norman (PI, Stockholm), Ludvig Beckman (Stockholm), Josef Hien (Mid-Sweden University), Anthoula Malkopoulou (Lund).

Populism and Democratic Defence in Europe
2020-23 | Carlsberg Foundation | EUR 1 million
The project investigates how liberal democracies can respond to and contain the perilous aspects of populist parties in an effective and legitimate fashion. Bringing together empirical and theory scholars, it examines national and supranational measures of democratic self-defence (legal, political, cultural) and normative questions that arise in connection to these measures.

Democratic Self-Defence: The Social Model
2019-22 | Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation | SEK 4 200 000
The project examines and evaluates —theoretically and empirically— the symbols, principles and policies employed to defend democracy against internal political threats. It focuses especially on the use of social integration (e.g. universal welfare) as a remedy against the rise of far-right extremist and populist parties. Its leading question is: How can the promotion of social equality contribute to the defence of democracy?

Contributivism
2019-23 | Swedish Research Council | SEK 5 968 000
The project studies the idea that democratic inclusion –in the form of citizenship and franchise– is grounded on economic contribution. It examines the institutional embodiments and political prospects of this idea by looking at legal practices, such as citizenship-by-investment programs, parliamentary debates on voting rights for non-citizens and popular attitudes towards contributivism.

Quo Vadis Catalonia?
2020-21 | Stockholm University | SEK 100 000
This pilot project examines the political crisis around Catalan independence as a normative, political and cultural puzzle. It looks at how questions of democratic legitimacy on one hand and claims for cultural recognition on the other interact with political agents' electoral interests in a multi-level party system.
Researchers: Josep Soler (PI, Stockholm), Niklas Bremberg, Anthoula Malkopoulou.
